SECOND SPECIAL REPORT
The Environmental Audit Committee has agreed to
the following Special Report:
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO THE SECOND REPORT
FROM THE COMMITTEE,
SESSION 19992000, ONWORLD TRADE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:
AN AGENDA FOR THE SEATTLE SUMMIT (HC 45, 1999-2000)
1. The Environmental Audit Committee published its
Second Report, 1999-2000, on 25 November 1999: World trade
and sustainable development: an agenda for the Seattle summit.[1]
The Government's response, in the form
of a joint Memorandum from the Department of Trade and Industry,
Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, and
the Department for International Development, was received on
1 February 2000.
2. The response was reported to the House and placed
in the Commons Library on 1 February 2000 and it was publicised
in a press notice as available.[2]
3. Since the failure, at Seattle of WTO members to
agree to launch a further comprehensive round of negotiations
two select committees have looked at the way forward:
- Select Committee on the
European Union: The World Trade Organisation: the EU Mandate
after Seattle[3] (House
of Lords); and
- International Development Committee: After Seattle
the World Trade Organisation and developing countries[4]
(House of Commons).
4. The Government's response to our report is formally
published here as an Appendix.
