1. The Environmental Audit Committee published its Second Report, 1999-2000, on 25 November 1999: World trade and sustainable development: an agenda for the Seattle summit.[1] The Government's response, in the form of a joint Memorandum from the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, and the Department for International Development, was received on 1 February 2000.

2. The response was reported to the House and placed in the Commons Library on 1 February 2000 and it was publicised in a press notice as available.[2]

3. Since the failure, at Seattle of WTO members to agree to launch a further comprehensive round of negotiations two select committees have looked at the way forward:

    - Select Committee on the European Union: The World Trade Organisation: the EU Mandate after Seattle[3] (House of Lords); and

    - International Development Committee: After Seattle — the World Trade Organisation and developing countries[4] (House of Commons).

4. The Government's response to our report is formally published here as an Appendix.
