Memorandum submitted by British Council on the Comprehensive Spending Review

Please find below figures showing the British Council's proposals for additional funding in the 2000 Spending Review and an estimate of the amount which is likely to result from the Spending Review settlement. The latter is an approximate figure because, to compare like with like, I have had to take the grant-in-aid which we were expecting to receive in 2001-02 as a result of the previous Comprehensive Spending Review (£139.1 million) and uplift it for inflation in 2002-03 and 2003-04 to establish the amount of "new" money which will be available to the Council in these two years. As you can see, in the final year of the next Spending Review period, the additional funding which the Council will receive amounts to roughly a third of the amount which we had originally asked for.
