Memorandum submitted by BBC World Service
Thank you for your letter regarding the Foreign
Affairs Committee's inquiry into the FCO's Annual Report 2001.
In January 2001 the World Service submitted a summary of its 3-Year
Plan 2001—2004 to the FAC in advance of its hearing on the
consequences of the Spending Review 2000. This submission is still
relevant for the Committee's inquiry on the FCO's Annual Report.

However, I would like to draw your attention
to our recently published record audience figure for the year
2000: the World Service met its target of 153 million weekly listeners
and increased its online traffic to 35 million monthly page impressions,
exceeding its target of 30 million
