Memorandum submitted by Mr Mike Welton,
Chief Executive, Balfour Beatty
I enclose three attachments offering additional
written evidence which we agreed that Balfour Beatty should submit
at the time I gave oral evidence to the Committee on 9 January.
These comprise:
1. Balfour Beatty Chairman, Lord Weir's letter
to Vivian Brown of ECGD of 26 January 2000, attaching a resume
of the position, as it then was, on the allegations made against
a French-led consortium in Lesotho,of which we were a part.
2. A brief note[9]
on the most serious incident of fraud perpetrated against the
company in recent years. This instance was in the UK but it amply
illustrates the vulnerability of large organisations to individual
actions and the difficulties of attaining appropriate convictions
and penalties over a long period of time. I am sure you will understand
that we wish this item to remain private.
3. Some notes on evidence submitted to the
Committee in writing, which contain factual inaccuracies and unsubstantiated
allegations in respect of Balfour Beatty.
