Select Committee on International Development First Special Report

Memorandum submitted by the Department for International Development

THE FUTURE OF THE EC DEVELOPMENT BUDGET

(First Report, Session 1998-99)

Since the publication of the International Development Committee's report "The Future of the EC Development Budget", in January 1999, the European Commission has embarked on a process of reform, both of the management of EC aid and of the wider Commission, prompted by pressure from Member States and triggered primarily by the resignation of the Santer Commission in March 1999.

The International Development Committee's report of 27 July 2000, "The Effectiveness of EC Development Assistance", examined in detail the extent to which these reforms and the commission's recent funding decisions conformed with the recommendations in the January 1999 report. DFID will be submitting a Memorandum in response to the July 2000 report shortly.
