Select Committee on Northern Ireland Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 15

Letter from Sinn Féin

RE: INQUIRY INTO THE REFORM OF LEGAL AID IN THE NORTH OF IRELAND

In October 1999 Sinn Féin made a formal submission to the "Public Benefit Public Purse" document which I enclose for the Committee's consideration.[17] I apologise for the poor quality of the document and will also e-mail it to you before the cut-off deadline. I thought that you may wish to have our response, at least in hard copy, as soon as possible.

As the Committee may be aware, consultation is underway to formulate a Bill of Rights for the North of Ireland. It is our view that every citizen should have the right to a fair trial and that fundamental to that is the issue of legal aid as a human right. We trust that the outcome of the Committee's considerations will support this position.
