Select Committee on Procedure Minutes of Evidence

Letter from Mr Alasdair Morgan MP to the Clerk of the Committee

My preference for electing a Speaker would be to have a secret ballot system using the alternative vote method, with one election resulting in the choice of candidate. The election would be concluded when the first preferences allocated to any one candidate achieved more than 50 per cent of the total vote.

In relation to the method of presenting candidates prior to the election, I do not feel that the mover and seconder is strictly necessary, although that could be retained, but I believe each candidate should be allowed to make a presentation to the house. Personally, I do not favour the introduction of a hustings question and answer session.
