Select Committee on Public Administration Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 4

Memorandum by Bristol City Council

I am pleased to enclose evidence of Bristol City Council's innovatory work to promote citizen participation in local Government.[1]

Bristol City Council, in partnership with Avon Health Authority, has established the Bristol citizens' panel as a new way to consult and involve local people. The attached report describes the rigorous methods that we have employed to establish a panel that is representative and inclusive of the population of Bristol as a whole. The report provides examples of how the panel is now being used to inform Council policy and priorities. Lastly, the report highlights the challenges that we face as the panel enters its second full year.

I am, of course, happy to provide the Committee with further information if required. I look forward to the outcomes of the inquiry.

Lucy de Groot

Policy Co-ordinator and Chief Executive
