The Committee deliberated.

Draft Special Report, proposed by the Chairman, brought up, read the first and second time, and agreed to.

Resolved, That the Report be the First Special Report of the Committee to the House.

Ordered, That the Chairman do make the Report to the House.

Ordered, That the response from both the Government and the Scottish Executive to the First Report from the Committee in Session 1999–2000 [Poverty in Scotland] be appended to the Report.—(The Chairman.)

Resolved, That a memorandum containing the Committee's Annual Report be sent to the Liaison Committee.

Resolved, That the Committee do visit the European Commission in Brussels and the World Trade Organization in Geneva in connection with its inquiry into the Drinks Industry in Scotland.—(The Chairman.)

The Drinks Industry in Scotland: Mr Jonathan Tait, Director, Food and Drink, Scottish Enterprise; and Ms Patricia Henton, Chief Executive, Dr James Curran, Head of Science and Mr Stewart Mitchell, Divisional Manager, SEPA North Region, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), were examined.

In the absence of the Chairman, Mrs Irene Adams took the Chair.

Dr Laurence Gruer, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, Greater Glasgow Health Board and Dr Martin Plant, Director, Alcohol and Health Research Centre, were examined.
