Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 22

Letter to the Clerk of the Committee on Standards and Privileges from Councillor Piara Singh Clair

I write in response to your letter concerning a donation to the Leicester East Labour Party by Mr B K Attwall in 1993. You asked me to check with the Bank. I have consulted with the Officers of the Party and they have confirmed to me that I could ask the Bank to see if they can supply me with the necessary statements. I have asked the Bank and they are going to revert to me. I have also made inquiries with past Treasurers about the matter. I shall send you the letter.

I must draw your attention to the telephone call that I received from Chris Hastings of the Sunday Telegraph. Mr Hastings asked me questions concerning a letter that I had received from Mrs Filkin. I am very disappointed that Mrs Filkin chose to speak to him about these matters.

I have today written a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission about the Sunday Telegraph piece and I will let you know when I receive their reply. I will send it to you.

This CLP is fed up with the Friday 2 February night telephone call from especially Mr Sayal and Mr Hastings, trying to put one Officer of the Party against the other. We know what he is up to. We ask you to stop these two individuals from interfering with this Party and we look to you for protection from them.
