APPENDIX 23
Letter to Councillor Piara Singh Clair
from the Clerk of the Committee on Standards and Privileges
Thank you for your letter of 5 February.
I have noted your comments about The Sunday Telegraph.
I have spoken to the Commissioner and seen a transcript of your
conversation with Mr Hastings, and I can assure you categorically
that at no stage has the Commissioner given Mr Hastings any information
about the conduct of her current inquiry.
The Committee on Standards and Privileges would be
grateful if you would give evidence to it on Tuesday 13 February
at 11.00 am in Committee Room 13, House of Commons.

The information the Committee is seeking is as follows:
(i) Confirmation from Leicester East Constituency
Labour Party's bank that Mr B S Attwal's cheque for £1000
was paid into the CLP's account on 8 January 1993. (You will recall
that I first asked you for this in my letter of 23 January.)
(ii) Confirmation that contributions from Mrs
Usha Mittal, Mr Charles Riachy, Mr R Verma, Lord Paul and Mr R
Mathrani towards Mr Keith Vaz's election campaign expenses were
not paid into the CLP's account; or alternatively, details of
the accounts into which those contributions were paid.
(iii) How many bank accounts does the CLP hold?
If there is more than one, what is the purpose of each?
If you were able to provide me with all this information
in writing by 10.30 am on Monday 12 February it would not
be necessary for you to appear before the Committee on Tuesday.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if
you would like any further information.
I am sending a copy of this letter to your home address.
