Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Third Report

Attachment B

Statement from Mr Allan Gratrix

In Leicester East we have relied heavily on the full-time Parliamentary office of our very hard working MP, Keith Vaz. We have worked together over a number of years to re-establish strength for the local Labour Party, which was rewarded with a massive increase in majority for Keith in the last general election, and with a good turn out in the County Elections earlier this year.

The Officers of the CLP and myself have come to a conclusion that now is the time to press forward with advancement for the Leicester East Labour Party and to try to establish a more permanent base of our own. This is doubly important as Keith has been promoted to Frontbench duties and there is an increasing workload in Parliamentary terms for Keith and his office.

It is our aim to have premises and a paid local organiser to co-ordinate fully, the Party's needs in Leicester East. To do this we need extra funds input by our Members. To do this in an imaginative way we have decided to launch a new "100 Club Lottery" for 100 Members who contribute to the lottery each month for cash prizes. In this way we will establish a regular income for the local party which will go towards funding for our future plans.

We cannot do this without the help and co-operation of members, and I appeal to you to get involved with this scheme which will directly have an impact on the Leicester East Labour Party. Only by building on the roots that have been firmly established in recent years can we hope to achieve outstanding victories in future local elections and general elections. We should not let all that hard ground work go to waste now, we have an opportunity to get ahead now, lets take it and build for an even better local party.
