Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Third Report

Annex 121

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from Mr Arthur Price-Jones

I refer to your letter of 12 April 2000 and our telephone conversation on 26 April.

I attach copies of file notes dated 28 April 1994. They were made very shortly after the discussions to which they relate. I do not recall very much more of this matter than the file notes disclose. I remember that there was considerable controversy over the sale of land at Hamilton to religious organisations. I have no recollections of further complaints or allegations being made to me or pursued regarding the conduct of Mr Vaz.

I confirm, therefore, that so far as I was concerned I took the view that no formal action was warranted in the absence of more specific evidence from persons willing to come forward on a formal basis. As far as I can remember Councillor Soulsby (as he then was) did not press the matter.

Please let me know if I can help further.
