Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Third Report

Annex 135

Letter to Mr Jaffer A Kapasi OBE DL MKD from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Thank you for your letter for 3 May and for our telephone conversation yesterday.

The only part of Sir Peter Soulsby's letter which refers to you is the sentence I quoted to you in my letter of 12 April 2000:

"This morning I telephoned Mr Jaffer Kapasi of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat who confirmed that he had been asked repeatedly for a `campaign contribution'."

I assure you that no other part of the letter refers to you. I am afraid I am not at liberty to send you the letter in full as the rest of it does not refer to you.

I am also concerned that you should describe the sentence as making an allegation against you. There is no allegation against you whatsoever contained in the letter.

Please would you let me know your account of this telephone conversation and any other conversation you had with Sir Peter on this matter.
