Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Third Report

Annex 153A

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from Finers Stephens Innocent, Solicitors

We thank you for your letter of 27 June received by fax late this afternoon. We are pleased that we have finally had disclosure of your interests with Sir Peter Soulsby. In the circumstances, we shall be taking our client's instructions as to whether or not he feels that the proceedings are thus far too tainted, that he should not deal with you.

We note, and further to our first letter of today's date that you have a taped record of your interview with Sir Peter Soulsby. Please would you disclose the substance of this, particularly the date on which Sir Peter asserts to have had the conversation with Mr Kapasi (as referred to in your letter). Please would you also advise us whether or not you have compared the Sunday Times transcript with the Sunday Times tape?

As a precaution and to abide future events, we have copied this letter to Sir Robert Sheldon.

27 June 2000
