Letter to Mr Nick Montagu CB, Chairman,
Inland Revenue, from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards
You may be aware from newspaper reports that
I am currently investigating allegations concerning Mr Vaz. One
of the allegations which has been made to me is that Mr Vaz improperly
agreed to put pressure on the Inland Revenue to accept a token
settlement in respect of outstanding tax. I attach the relevant
extract from the complaint letter.
I wonder if you would let me know whether Mr
Vaz has ever made any approaches of any kind to the Inland Revenue
in support of Mr S A Zaiwalla of Zaiwalla & Co, 33 Chancery
Lane, London WC2A 1ZZ. If he has, perhaps you would give me details
and any other information which might help my enquiry. I should
stress that I do not require any information about the tax affairs
of any person. My sole interest is whether there is any substance
in the allegation of improper influence.
