Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Third Report

Annex 54

Letter to Mr Geoffrey Bindman, Bindman & Partners, Solicitors, from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Thank you for your letter of the 4 December 2000.

On seeing the Sunday Telegraph's articles concerning Mr Vaz, I wrote to the Sunday Telegraph asking them to provide me with all the information they had received which related to the allegations which I was investigating concerning possible non registration matters.

The Sunday Telegraph telephoned me to tell me what information they were sending me. The information provided included the list which had been provided to them anonymously. The list arrived on 16 February 2000 with a Sunday Telegraph cover note repeating the above. As I said I am not aware of any accompanying document and none was provided to me by the Sunday Telegraph.

I do assure Mr Vaz that the questions which I have asked are relevant to the matters under investigation.

Please could you let me know, by return, when I may expect a substantial reply to my letter of the 27 November as I must inform the Standards and Privileges Committee on Tuesday next, 12 December, of the replies which remain outstanding on this enquiry.

6 December 2000
