I telephoned Mr Rowley as, when drafting my memorandum,
I found I was unclear on 2 points.
1. I asked him if he could confirm the date on
which he had taped the telephone conversation with Dr Reid. He
replied that he believed it was the day before his meeting with
me in Edinburgh. I said that would have been 20 March 2000. He
confirmed that as correct.
2. I asked him whether he had had any conversation
with Mr Maxton about staff resources for the election campaign.
He replied that he had not but that Mr Maxton had made the offer
of his researcher to Annmarie Whyte. Annmarie Whyte had reported
the offer to Mr Rowley as Mr Rowley`s agreement to the Labour
Party`s part of the salary was necessary. The offer was to make
Chris Winslow available to work on the campaign full-time with
part of his salary coming from Mr Maxton and part from the Labour
Party. (This offer was made prior to Dr Reid`s offer of Mr Reid.)
