Annex 166
Letter to Mr Paul McKinney from the Parliamentary
Commissioner for Standards
Further to our correspondence in March and the helpful
discussion in Edinburgh I am writing to ask you for one further
piece of information.
I have now interviewed a number of people and I find
I am not quite clear about the detail of the conversation which
you had with Dr Reid at Keir Hardy House.
You told me that you raised the staffing resource
problem in the margins of the meeting. You confirmed that Dr Reid
said something like "my boy Kevin isn`t doing anything, he
could come and help".
I have been informed, and I see that it was reported
in the Observer article of 23 January 2000, that Dr Reid went
on to say "and I will find a way of paying him".
Please would you let me know whether that is a correct
record of what Dr Reid said to you on that occasion.
You may prefer to telephone me with your reply, but
in any case I would be grateful for a reply as soon as possible
to enable me to conclude my enquiries.
May I thank you again for your assistance with my
enquiries, which has been most helpful. I look forward to hearing
from you.
