Letter to the Chairman of the Standards
and Privileges Committee from Lesley Quinn
I am in receipt of your correspondence of 21st June
2000 which caused me great concern. I believe members of the Standards
and Privileges Committee should be made aware of the full facts
regarding my involvement with this inquiry.
On 21st May 2000 I received correspondence from The
Commissioner asking me to provide her with a copy of a financial
reference for Mr Kevin Reid from the Scottish Labour Party. She
indicate that we supplied this reference in 1998.
Being aware of the importance of The Commissioner`s
inquiries, I gave prompt attention to this matter and spent a
considerable amount of time trying to locate the reference.
However, on 23rd June, my office informed me that
the said reference was given in 1999 and not 1998. This followed
checks both with my Office Manager and our Personnel Department
at Millbank Tower. This reference has now been forwarded to The
Commissioner. The delay in locating the reference was due to the
fact that the date given by The Commissioner was based on wrong
This is the second time in the course of my involvement
with this inquiry where I have had to rectify procedural difficulties.
On 30th March, I attended an interview with The Commissioner in
London. Following that interview Ms Filkin contacted me indicating
that her tape recorder had broken during our interview. In an
effort to be fully co-operative, I offered to have a transcript
made from my recording and forwarded this to her on 13th April
2000. Her office, then contacted me again at the end of April,
stating they had misplaced the transcript I had sent. Again, in
an attempt to be helpful I faxed a further copy.
I regard the work of the Committee on Standards and
Privileges as extremely important. Throughout this inquiry I have
sought to give my full assistance to the Commissioner and will
continue to do so for the duration of the inquiry.
