Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Second Report

Annex 25

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from the Rt Hon Dr John Reid MP

Thank you for your letter of 22nd June.

I note your statement at item (i). It follows that I am not being permitted by you to see what has been said that confirms my statement. I am not being told who has given statements in connection with your investigation and that I am not in a position to offer views on what others unknown may have said about me. Please note I do not regard this as fair procedure but I say nothing further about this.

I take it from item (ii) that I am expected to deal with Mr Nelson`s complaint that is the limit of your enquiry.

I am pleased to note what you say at items (iii) and (iv).

I hope to complete my written response for you soon and am aiming to have this with you by 3rd July. As I have been provided with a considerable amount of material and information with your letters of 19th May, 5th June, 13th June and 19th June, you will appreciate I hope, that this important matter cannot be dealt with superficially by me.

23 June 2000
