Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Second Report

Annex 29

Letter to the Rt Hon Dr John Reid MP from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Thank you for your letter of 17 July 2000.

I am sorry I did not write to you to acknowledge receipt of your submission on 5 July. My assistant thanked the person who delivered it by hand to my office, but I should have written to you.

The Standards and Privileges Committee holds its last meeting before the recess next week and will not, I understand, meet again until October.

I therefore intend to put my report with any other comment you wish to make to the Committee at their first meeting. To achieve that timetable I shall have to provide the completed report to the Clerk for circulation in early October.

Having considered your submission carefully, I hope to send you my draft report in early September. I will be able to offer you two weeks for further comment before I come to my conclusions.

I agree that the recess adds to the delay for you and I, too, wish that the matter were concluded.

19 July 2000
