Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner
for Standards from Mr John Maxton MP
I write to thank you for your letter of 27th January
and to acknowledge receipt of the enclosed copy of the e-mail
from Dean Nelson.
Obviously I shall respond to Mr Nelson`s allegations.
However I should be grateful if you would let me know whether
the complainant is the Observer newspaper or Mr Nelson. The nature
of e-mail entails it having no signature and I wonder whether
Mr Nelson sent a signed letter to you following his e-mail. Since
the allegation against me consists of little more that one sentence,
I should be grateful if you would tell me whether Mr Nelson has
provided any evidence in support of his accusation.
Of course, I do understand that you are obliged to
ask for a response to any complaint made against a Member of Parliament
before you take a decision as to whether a preliminary investigation
I will therefore be sending you a considered response
to Mr Nelson`s allegations as soon as I am able to do so.
