Select Committee on Trade and Industry Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 80 - 81)

TUESDAY 31 OCTOBER 2000

MR JOHN MUMFORD, MR MALCOLM BRINDED, MR DAVID CODD, MR GARY JONES AND MR STEVE POLKEY

Chairman

  80. Have you calculated the extent of the loss? Over time have you been able to see it? Have you any views on the vignette argument, the idea of having a "Welcome to the UK, please give us X amount of pounds or euros"?
(Mr Mumford) I think the issue with this is all about the policeability and just how would the administration work? Is it something that is easy to bypass if it is a complicated area.

  81. Gentlemen, I think we have covered most of the points this morning. As I say, we knew that we would have to deal with the events of September but we also wanted to get your view as business people selling petrol and also business people who use diesel to deliver your products. We hope that you will not have to put in train the precautions which you have taken.
(Mr Jones) We hope so as well.

Chairman: One would hope that equally you can once more restore the confidence of the British consumer. Thank you very much for your evidence this morning. If there is anything that on reflection you would like to supplement it with, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
