Select Committee on Trade and Industry Minutes of Evidence

Supplementary memorandum submitted by The Freight Transport Association

I refer to the material on page 70. We have made enquiries with Eurotunnel and understand that a Saturday service is still available for truck operators wishing to cross the Channel in order to take advantage of the lower price of fuel in France. The fare is presently £80 return enabling the vehicle to take advantage of 1,000 litre tank of fuel at £460 in France as opposed to £700 in the UK—a saving of £240 on the fuel or £160 when deducting the fare.

Of course if the tank size exceeds 1,000 litres, and for obvious reasons it frequently will, then the saving will be greater.
