Select Committee on Trade and Industry Minutes of Evidence

Further supplementary memorandum submitted by the Freight Transport Association

I refer to your fax of 9 November seeking details of businesses going under as a consequence of fuel increases.

Of course it is very difficult to be specific in blaming fuel price or duty as the cause of closure. However, they are very frequently cited as the most influential cause.

I attach herewith some recent material supplied to us by the Statistics Directorate at the DTI. I'm not sure, however, that these figures tell us too much.

I would also refer you to some supplementary evidence which we submitted to the ETR Select Committee inquiry into the same subject earlier in the year.[3]

A list of company closures appears on page 229 of their report titled "The Road Haulage Industry".1
