Select Committee on Trade and Industry Minutes of Evidence

Further supplementary memorandum submitted by Mast Action UK

Additional Information requested by the Committee.

A.   Masts which have been removed:

  1.  Orange mast on school property in Speke, Liverpool—removed due to intense pressure from school parents and governing body.

  2.  Vodafone mast on roof of St Pauls Way School, Tower Hamlets—removed due to intense pressure from school teachers and union.

  3.  Manningtree Essex, mast put up under GPDO but actually found to be over 15m. An enforcement notice was issued and the mast was subsequently removed. We believe there to be a number of masts that are actually over the 15m height limit.

B.   TETRA System

We would also like to register our serious concerns with regard to the new TETRA system which is currently being rolled out across the country for the emergency services. Some of our members, especially in the Gloucestershire area, are already experiencing problems with planning applications for TETRA masts to be sited extremely closely to their homes. This is of special concern as Independent Expert Group concluded that " . . .amplitude modulation around 16Hz should be avoided if possible . . ." para 5.59. TETRA is in direct contravention of that recommendation.
