Select Committee on Welsh Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 7

Memorandum submitted by Mid-Wales Tourism

The Welsh Development Agency, in partnership with the Wales Tourist Board, have over the past two years made great strides in promoting Wales overseas. In particular, since the establishment of the Welsh Assembly, the trade missions organised by the Assembly and usually led by the First Secretary have proved very successful and have done an enormous amount to give Wales a much higher profile in overseas markets.

In terms of tourism, the British Tourist Authority holds a brief to market and promote Wales overseas. This is often forgotten. In many overseas markets, BTA provides Wales with a considerable amount of profile. In other markets it has very little. This must be an issue which needs addressing when statistics show that only 2 per cent of visitors from abroad which enter the UK actually come to Wales.
