Select Committee on Welsh Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Letter from the French Embassy

Thank you for your letter of 29 November, concerning the inquiry you are conducting on "Wales in the world: the role of the UK Government in promoting Wales abroad" and the intentions of the French Government regarding the possibility of establishing a post in Wales.

Due to Budget constraints, the general trend is to decrease the number of French Consulates worldwide, particularly in the European Union Countries.

However, France is extremely keen to strengthen its relations with Wales in every area as his Excellency Mr Daniel Bernard emphasised during his visits to Wales on 25-27 May 1999 and on 8 April 2000.
