House of CommonsShort guide to procedure and practice

Business statement

The business for the forthcoming week (and sometimes provisionally for the week after) is announced by the Leader of the House at 12.30 p.m. or later on Thursdays (usually after any ministerial statements). The Leader of the House answers questions on the statement, and can be asked to arrange debates on other matters (e.g. the subjects of Early Day Motions) not covered by the statement. The contents of the statement appear in part A of the Future Business paper on the following day (or part B for sittings in Westminster Hall.).
