Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Annex 3

Letter, 3 November 2000, from the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to the Chairman of Sport England

LEE VALLEY STADIUM

I understand that on 6 November Sport England will be considering an application from the Lee Valley Partnership for funding for a feasibility study. I recognise that this is entirely Sport England's decision. I thought it might be helpful, though, if I set out the Government's position on this project.

The Government are firmly committed to the success of the Lee Valley Stadium Project. As you know, along with Sport England and UK Sport, we fully supported UK Athletics in their bid to hold the World Athletics Championships in London in 2005 and their conclusion that the Lee Valley site was the best option for the stadium for those World Championships. So we are fully behind this project.

At this stage of the project's development, there is, of course, a lot of further work needed, particularly in identifying sources of finance. But I wanted you to know that we, for our part, will do all we can to support the Lee Valley Partnership in identifying funding sources which will help bridge the funding gap.
