Letter, 10 January 2000, from DCMS to
Sport England with attached correspondence (Annex A)
ENGLISH NATIONAL STADIUM
Thank you for your letter of 16 December. I
am sorry not to have been able to respond earlier. Things have
moved on since you wrote, and I know you have now received some
preliminary information from the RFU. We have arranged for Ellerbe
Becket to assess the Twickenham option on the same basis as they
did Wembley. They have been in touch with the Twickenham architects
to obtain detailed drawings and other information they need. We
will share their findings with you as soon as we have them.
You ask whether we have any information on the
outcome of discussions with the Football Association. As you will
be aware, the FA has offered to repay some of the grant they have
received in return for removing the requirement to stage athletics
at the National Stadium. Details of the offer are set out in the
attached letter from the Secretary of State to Ken Bates. It is,
of course, for you to flesh out the agreement, and to improve
its terms if possible.
