Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 117 - 119)

WEDNESDAY 30 OCTOBER 2002

MR ROB OATES, MS KIRSTY LEWIN AND MS RUTH DAVIS

Chairman

  117. Good morning. For the record, Mr Rob Oates you are the Rivers and Wetlands Officer for World Wildlife Fund.
  (Mr Oates) Correct

  118. Ms Kirsty Lewin you are the Head of Water Policy at the RSPB and Ms Ruth Davis you are the Senior Water Policy Officer. Have I got that right?
  (Ms Lewin) Yes

Paddy Tipping

  119. We have heard from large environmental organisations and it is clear that you are already connected with the Directive and are doing some work on it. Austin Mitchell was asking our last witnesses why there was no river basin study here in the UK. We are the only European partner, I think, that has not got a study. Do you know why that is?
(Mr Oates) My colleagues in Europe tell me that the reason given why the UK has not offered a pilot river basin to test some of the good guidance for the Directive is that we have a lack of resources here within DEFRA and the Environment Agency. Whether that is true or not, you will have to ask them.
