The Committee deliberated.

Ordered, That the Sub-committee on Hazardous Waste have the following Orders of Reference: "Taking note of the current review by the Performance and Innovation Unit, to examine whether the particular problems of dealing with hazardous waste have properly been taken into account in the development of waste disposal policies. It will specifically consider the impact of past changes in legislation governing landfill on hazardous waste disposal, and whether the Government and others will be ready to comply with the ban due to come into effect in July 2002 on hazardous liquid waste entering Non-Hazardous and Inert sites; examine the steps taken by the Government to prepare for the implementation of the Hazardous Waste Incineration Directive and the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive, as well as the End of Life Vehicles Directive and the proposed Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive inasmuch as they deal with special wastes; and consider the progress of DEFRA's 'root and branch' review of its Special Waste Regulations.".—(The Chairman.)

Ordered, That the Sub-committee on Illegal Meat Imports have the following Orders of Reference: "To examine the adequacy of the Government's action plan, published on 28 March 2002, intended to address concerns about the risk of disease from meat and other food products illegally smuggled into the United Kingdom. In particular it will make use of examples of policies and practices adopted by other countries in assessing the action plan.".—(The Chairman.)

Resolved, That the Hazardous Waste Sub-committee do visit Cheshire in connection with its inquiry.

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE): Mr Peter Nash, Director, Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) Directorate, Mr Peter Soul, Head of Veterinary TSE Team, and Dr Mandy Bailey, Head of BSE Division, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, were examined.
