Select Committee on European Scrutiny First Report

Letter from an official at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to the Clerk of the Committee

I am writing to let you know the outcome of the May Agriculture Council.

The main achievement of the Council was unanimous agreement on changes to the CAP sugar regime. This included a prolongation of most aspects of the regime until 2006 combined with a commitment to review the regime's future in 2003. The changes agreed will save some 300 million euro annually to the CAP budget.

The Council also considered proposed changes to the beef and olive oil regimes, leading to subsequent agreement at its June meeting. It also debated the latest situation on Foot and Mouth Disease and BSE in the EU, as well as the ethical aspects of animal husbandry.
