  The Committee deliberated.

  Resolved, That the Committee do visit Durham and Carlisle in connection with its inquiry into The Role of the Private Sector in the NHS.- (The Chairman.)

  Ordered, That Mr Sea«n Boyle, Mr Jon Sussex, and Professor Nick Bosanquet be appointed Specialist Advisers to assist the Committee in matters relating to public expenditure.- (The Chairman.)

  Ordered, That Mr John Appleby, Professor Tony Harrison, Mr Kingsley Manning and Mr Chris Vellenoweth, be appointed Specialist Advisers in matters relating to the Role of the Private Sector in the NHS.- (The Chairman.)

  Public Expenditure: the Rt Hon Alan Milburn, a Member of the House, Secretary of State for Health, Jacqui Smith, a Member of the House, Minister of State, Mr Richard Douglas, Director of Finance, Mr Giles Denham, Deputy Director of Policy for Children, Older People and Social Care Services, and Mr Neil McKay, Chief Operating Officer, Department of Health, were examined.
