  Footnotes:

  1.  The NHS Trust based information includes patients waiting to be admitted to NHS hospitals in England either as a day case or ordinary admission.

  2.  The responsible population based information excludes patients living outside England and all privately funded patients waiting for treatment in NHS hospitals. However, it does include NHS funded patients living in England, who are waiting for treatment in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, abroad and at private hospitals, which are not included in the corresponding NHS trust based returns.

  3.  Data not available prior to quarter ending 30 June 1996.

4.16b  Could the Department provide an update of Tables 4.15.4 to 4.15.8 on outpatient waiting times?

  3.  The first NHS Trust based outpatient data published were for the quarter ended 30 September 1994. They have since been published on a quarterly basis. The first published data on patients still waiting for more than 13 and 26 weeks were for the quarter ended 30 September 1996. A resident-based outpatient return has been collected from Health Authorities from April 1997 to March 1999, then collected on a Health Authorities responsible population from April 1999.

  4.  Health Authorities and NHS Trusts are working towards seeing all patients within 26 weeks of being referred by their GP. During the quarter ending 31 March 2001, 76 per cent of patients were seen within 13 weeks and 94 per cent were seen within 26 weeks. Table 4.16.4 shows the number of GP written referrals which, on 31 March 2001, had not yet been seen but had been waiting for 13 to under 26 weeks and 26 weeks and over.

  5.  Tables 4.16.4 to 4.16.8 show information on outpatient waiting times for the quarter ending 31 March 2001.
