APPENDIX 1

WEST MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL NHS TRUST

West Middlesex University Hospital is a major acute hospital in Isleworth, an attractive part of West London, close to the Thames and within easy reach of Richmond, Heathrow and central London.

West Middlesex is embarking on a £48 million redevelopment scheduled for completion in 2003, to concentrate the hospital around a state of the art new critical care centre.

QUALITY AND INNOVATION

West Middlesex has an impressive record: we perform well in comparative assessments of clinical performance and hold Charter Marks for excellence in maternity services and more recently for our sexual health clinic.

We are at an exciting stage in a booked admissions project to improve the process of patient care for elective treatments, supported by pioneering new computer systems. This work is attracting much attention throughout the NHS and we have been designated a Beacon Site.

We are part of a cancer collaboration project with three other hospitals to improve care for cancer patients and are designated the Learning Centre for London as a centre of best practice.

We have a busy A&E department supporting medicine and care of the elderly, plus a very strong maternity unit.

There are five inpatient operating theatres and a purpose built day surgery unit with three operating theatres. These will be re-provided in the redevelopment. We have also built a new cancer support and information centre.

Our X-Ray department has one of the most modern CT scanners in the country and sophisticated ultra sound equipment. We also have a new MRI scanner.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP

As a university hospital, West Middlesex is closely associated with the Medical School at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

By working collaboratively with other healthcare providers and with non-NHS organisations, we ensure that our services are patient-focused, cost effective and rigorously monitored.

We also work hard to create a physical environment conducive to good healthcare and welfare of staff.

Above all, West Middlesex is an extremely friendly and supportive place to work.
