Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 3

Letter from the Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party to the Chairman of the Committee

It is becoming of increasing concern that the present restricted membership of Select Committees is preventing representatives of the smaller minority parties from playing their full part in scrutinising the work of the Executive.

The Ulster Unionist Parliamentary Party is willing to collaborate with the other smaller minority parties with a view to rotating membership on Select Committees—on an annual basis during the life of a Parliament—where no minority party other than the Liberal Democrats is currently represented.

I would therefore ask you to consider increasing the membership of such Select Committees as necessary to enable the smaller parties such as the Ulster Unionist Party to have our own voice rather than be dependent on a much larger party to represent our view.
