Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 8

Letter from Mr Howard Flight MP to the Chairman of the Committee

ELECTING SELECT COMMITTEES

Graham Allen has kindly sent me a copy of his letter to you of 21 July with his proposals for Members of the legislature to elect their own Select Committees.

I would like to add my name as a supporter of the proposals, albeit that I would prefer (as prescribed by the Clerks under the present parliamentary composition) the seven Labour, three Conservative and one minority participants to be elected as a House matter, with Labour MPs able to vote on Tory candidates and vice versa, rather than sticking to each Party voting for its candidates.

I appreciate this may not be politically possible for the present, but I believe it is likely to achieve a better result in terms of de-Party politicising Select Committees, where Members of all Parties tend to know who has a worthwhile contribution/involvement to give in particular territories.
