Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 9

Letter from Mr Jim Knight MP to the Chairman of the Committee

ELECTING SELECT COMMITTEES

I have a few concerns as a new member about Graham's paper. I fear it maybe ultimately conservative in that once someone was elected on to a select committee they would be difficult to dislodge. Experience on select committees is clearly invaluable but so is experience of the real world that fresh blood can bring. I accept that new members may need to earn their spurs but experienced members also need to keep fresh. How about a maximum term on select committees? Similarly a limit to the number of years a Labour member would act as chair?
