Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 10

Letter from Dr Nick Palmer MP to the Chairman of the Committee

I should like to associate myself with the views on select committees which I understand you've had from Graham Allen, with one difference of detail. I think that it should be possible to stand for more than one committee, but that people elected to more than one would have to choose to stand down from all but one, with runners-up for those moving up appropriately. This would avoid people having to make tortuous calculations—"If I stand for Treasury I might not get it, so I'd better stand for the less popular DCMS, even though I know more about Treasury matters". In other respects I think Graham's views and supporting arguments make good sense.
