APPENDIX 3
Letter from the Chief Whip, Ulster Unionist
Party to the Clerk of the Committee
I am writing in response to the letter from
Mr Nicholas Winterton MP, dated 18 December 2001, requesting my
party's views on the present process of appointing Deputy Speakers.
Whilst we are more than satisfied with the work
of the current Deputy Speakers, we do feel that the process of
appointing them should allow greater consultation with all parties
represented in the House of Commons.
It can only be for the good that Deputy Speaker
posts are filled without the need for a division. However, this
outcome can only realistically be achieved in future if all parties
feel they have been involved in the decision-making process which
leads to the selection of approved candidates.
