Mr Tim Burr, Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General, was examined.

 The Committee deliberated.

 Mr Brian Glicksman, Treasury Officer of Accounts was further examined.

 The Comptroller and Auditor General's Report on Purchasing Professional Services (HC 400) was considered.

 Mr Peter Gershon, CBE, Chief Executive, and Mr Hugh Barrett, Executive Director, the Office of Government Commerce, and Mr Michael Whitehouse, Director, the National Audit Office were examined (HC 309-i).

 Mr Richard Bacon declared a former non-pecuniary interest as a Director of the Management Consultancies Association.

 The witnesses were further examined.

Draft Report (Better Value for Money from Professional Services), proposed by the Chairman, brought up and read.

 Ordered, That the draft Report be read a second time, paragraph by paragraph.

 Paragraphs 1 and 2 read and agreed to.

 Paragraph 3 postponed.

 Paragraphs 4 to 33 read and agreed to.

 Postponed paragraph 3 read and agreed to.

 Resolved, That the Report be the Twenty-first Report of the Committee to the House.

 Ordered, That the Chairman do make the Report to the House.

 Ordered, That the provisions of Standing Order No. 134 (Select Committees (Reports)) be applied to the Report.
