Select Committee on Work and Pensions Minutes of Evidence

Supplementary memorandum from BAE SYSTEMS (SHP 6A)

Can I thank you for the opportunity to give evidence to the Scottish Affairs Select Committee on 19 June 2002.

If I can draw the Scottish Affairs Select Committee's attention to Question 120 from the evidence given on 19 June 2002, as you will have noted neither myself nor Mr Phillipson were personally aware of any contact between the Scotland Office and BAE SYSTEMS since the Task Force report. However since last week's committee hearing, it has come to my attention that there has indeed been ongoing dialogue between both organisations on the subject of shipbuilding on the Clyde. I do apologise for our lack of awareness, which is partly as a result of role changes within the company in recent months.

I hope this has clarified the position that indeed the Scotland Office is giving ongoing support to our Clyde Shipbuilding Business.

Mr Simon Kirby

Managing Director, Type 45 Destroyer PCO
