Select Committee on Science and Technology Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 2

Memorandum submitted by Mr Victor Smith, Solent Laryngectomy Club

The New Opportunities Fund in making money available for carers of cancer patients was a lucky break here. Locally we successfully applied for money and have been able to open a Drop-in Centre in Gosport. After being open for five months we think we have a rewarding on-going project.

It is generally thought that the money allocated under the Cancer Plan has not yet percolated down to the "coal face".

I have no knowledge of the VNCRU perhaps it is still in the virtual stage?

I think the third question perhaps needs turning round to read "the issue of Data Protection and its implication for cancer registration". Accurate statistics are vital. Could not the Data Protection Act prevent Registries reporting accurate incidence? We have always been obsessed by secrecy in England.

The Cancer Research Networks seems to be still over the horizon, though I am investigating this at local level right now.
