Select Committee on Science and Technology Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 20

Memorandum submitted by Mr Fred Walker, Castleford and District Cancer Self-Help Group

MEN'S CANCERS

Since presenting myself before you in parliament "Cancer A Fresh Look" and giving you my presentation re men's cancers there doesn't appear to be much happening especially in respect of prostate cancers.

Research into finding prostate cancers in its early stages to enable treatment to be successful I still feel is not being addressed adequately.

TESTICULAR CANCER

Making the public aware (self examination) and what can be done (advertising in places that men frequent) eg men's toilets, football grounds, night clubs, working men's clubs etc etc doesn't appear to have been addressed in many parts of the country.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CANCER SELF HELP GROUPS

Being on the executive of the above organisation and discussing men's cancers with men from all over the country who have had a diagnosis of cancer, like me are convinced that they feel discriminated against because maybe they are not as vocal as many women with a diagnosis of cancer.
