APPENDIX 44

the Higher Education Funding Council for England
Response to queries from the Committee

AND SCIENCE/ENGINEERING
FOR (I)
2001-02 AND (II)
FOR 2002-03 (ESTIMATED
FIGURES IF
NECESSARY)
We have used HEFCE's cost bands as the basis
for the split between arts/humanities and science. Broadly speaking
cost bands A and B are science and engineering
Cost Band | Proportion of
Total
(2001-02)
| Proportion of

|
Ahigh cost subjects | 63 per cent
| 60 per cent |
Bintermediate cost subjects | 12 per cent
| 14 per cent |
Clow cost subjects | 25 per cent
| 26 per cent |
Total Mainstream QR | 100 per cent
| 100 per cent |
Membership of cost bands is given in annex D of the HEFCE's
evidence to the committee.
2. NUMBER OF
INVITATION TO
SERVE ON
PANEL DECLINED
IN TOTAL
AND FROM
INDUSTRY FOR
2001
Our analysis shows there were 102 invitations given to the
above group of which 29 were declined compared to 52 out of 653.
3. NUMBERS/PROPORTIONS
OF PANEL
MEMBERSHIP IN
SCIENCE AND
ENGINEERING UOAS
FROM INDUSTRY
FOR 2001
Within the engineering and physical sciences umbrella panel
area there were 115 panel members of which 18 were from the above
categories.
On examination of the data on panel nominations we feel that
it should be treated with some caution it s not always clear what
a potential panel members background is and there is some scope
for different coding to be used for similar staff. Therefore,
I have grouped non-government/CBI users and industry together
for these purposes. It is also worth noting these data are drawn
from the panel nomination database so may no reflect changes made
to the panels after the initial appointment of members was made.
4. THE AVERAGE
NUMBER OF
PATIENTS SUBMITTED
PER RESEARCHER
IN HIGH
COST UNITS
IN EACH
GRADE FOR
2001
