Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Fifth Report

Annex ii61

Letter to Mr Mohammed Pathan from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Thank you for your letter of 30 August 2001, which we received on 12 September 2001, and your offer of further help with this inquiry. I assume your letter must have crossed with my letter to you of 10 September 2001. (If you have not received that letter please let me know)

The transcript of our meeting on 4 July 2001

I am grateful to you for sending me your suggested corrections and information and look forward to receiving the information you are obtaining from the company accountant (3. reference page 38).

Questions from my letter of 10 July 2001

Thank you for providing some information in response to my questions. It will be helpful if you would also provide the following:

6.  The totals which your offer, for salaries and fees for each director and employee, for each of the years the company operated.

7.  The information you are obtaining from the landlords.

8.  Your estimate of the period covered by the list which you provided for the Committee. They will appreciate that the list was compiled from your knowledge and involvement with the company and therefore may not be comprehensive and that the period you estimate may not be totally accurate.

9.  Likewise the Committee needs your estimate of this amount though will recognise that this may not be a precise figure.

I note that you confirm that Mr Vaz did not receive any payments from Mapesbury Communications.

My letter of 10 September 2001

Please would you let me have your replies to these questions without delay. As I have explained, difficulties are being caused by delays on this inquiry and to be fair to all those involved I wish to conclude matters as soon as possible.

Finally, may I repeat the apology which I gave you at our meeting when you expressed surprise that the shorthand writer had made a tape recording as backup to ensure that her record of our conversation was accurate. You will recall that you and Ms Fernandes requested the tape recording and the shorthand writer provided it to you after she had used it to make the transcript. There is no copy of the tape.

Thank you once again for your assistance which I appreciate.

13 September 2001
