Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Fifth Report

Annex ii85

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from Mr Keith Vaz MP

Thank you for your letter of 31st October 2001.

143  Thank you for apologising for your mistake concerning the misidentification of a witness. This is why I believe so strongly these matters should be about dealing with facts rather than rumour or innuendo.

144  I would be grateful if your letter remains on file in its original form rather than it being changed in the way you suggest. If it is your intention to publish it I am sure that you will refer to the error of fact in some way.

145  Can I point out another mistake of fact in page 7 of your letter of 19th October 2001 you state that Paul Townsend was registered to vote at 153 Scraptoft Lane, Leicester since 1995-6. I have now received copies of the electoral register for that address since 1989. The information that you have given is inaccurate.

146  Please let me have your response to the points in my letter of 6th August 2001 so that I can deal with any outstanding points.

147  Please will you forward Mrs William's consent to the publication of her file so that I can deal with the points that she has raised. I have already obtained the information on this and have prepared a reply to her points so as to avoid any delay.

I look forward to hearing from you.

12 November2001
